Abstract:
Background: Female condom is a barrier form of contraceptive that has been proven to be effective in preventing the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies. But unlike the male condom, it is not widely known and readily available in Nigeria. This study assessed the knowledge, acceptability, and willingness to use female condom among students of tertiary institutions in Delta State, Nigeria.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 308 students of tertiary institutions using multistage sampling technique. Data collected was analysed using the IBM SPSS version 22 software. Both descriptive and inferential analysis was done. Qualitative data were presented in frequency tables. Chi-square test was used to assess the factors associated with willingness to use female condom and knowledge of female condom. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05.
Results: Of the 308 respondents, 44.2% of them had good knowledge of female condom while 55.8% had poor knowledge of female condom. Female condom was acceptable to 180 (58.4%) respondents, and all 180 (58.4%) respondents were also willing to use female condom when provided. The significant factors associated with willingness to use female condom include age, marital status, institution, level of study and attitude toward female condom (p<0.05).
Conclusion: There was overall poor knowledge of female condom among respondents, and most respondents were willing to use it when provided. Further studies to assess actual utilization of female condom are suggested
