Abstract:
This review paper of literature highlights the importance of botanical biopesticides for the eco-friendly integrated pest management (IPM) in agriculture. Biopesticides are being used for preventing crops from pests and pathogens. The key elements of biopesticide management are a reduced crop loss and strong management of weeds and diseases. Biological pesticides (biopesticides) are substances produced from biological agents that manage pests in agriculture to enhance crop production. They can be sourced from microorganisms, plants, or nanoparticles. Biopesticides are cheap, environment-friendly, specific in their mode of action, sustainable, do not leave residues, and are not associated with the release of greenhouse gases. In the category of botanical pesticides, neem-based products are at the top, whereas application of other plant-based products such as pyrethrum, eucalyptus leaf extract, and Cymbopogon nardus is less common at field level. Essential oil and extract from different parts of plants have been successfully used to control plant diseases. They attract, repel, prevent respiration, detect host plants from specific pests, destroy the eggs and larvae of pests, and destroy pests from feeding on plants. The widespread use of synthetic pesticides in agriculture has led to environmental contamination, pesticide residues in food, a threat to non target organisms, and persistence in the fields. In contrary to synthetics, biopesticides have emerged as a green tool in the era of sustainable agriculture.
