Assessment of electromagnetic radiation from high tension power lines in Makurdi

Abstract: 
This study assessed the levels of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) emitted from high-tension power lines at Akawe Torkula Polytechnic, North Bank Makurdi, and evaluated the potential exposure risks to residents and the surrounding environment. Using an Electro-smog Meter (TES-92), measurements of electric and magnetic fields were taken at varying distances (0–100 m) in different directions from the transmission lines, both along tarred roads and near residential houses. The data collected were analyzed and compared with the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) safety limits. Results revealed that EMR exposure was highest at points closest to the transmission lines, particularly near residential houses, but decreased progressively with distance. All measured values, however, remained well below the ICNIRP recommended limits. The findings highlight the importance of maintaining adequate buffer zones and increasing public awareness of EMR exposure. Recommendations include continuous monitoring of EMR levels, adherence to international safety guidelines, and urban planning strategies to minimize long-term exposure risks.
